Genestealers often make homes of these Space Hulks, attacking those who come aboard in order to spread their genetic code further afield. The game pits an investigative force of Space Marines against such a coven. Games Workshop re-released a limited edition of the game on August 18, It features unique figures and it is unclear if the rules matches those of the First or the Second Edition of the game, including Librarians , Space Marine Captains , most of the weapons available for Space Marine Terminators and a new Genestealer miniature, the Brood Lord.

This limited edition revival was intended for use by two players. Another limited edition of the game was released on September 20, The original board game has served as the inspiration for a number of different Warhammer 40, video games -- both tactical turn-based and first-person shooter -- based upon it.

Contents [ show ] Gameplay The game is set on a board made up of various corridor and room tiles which can be freely arranged and locked together like a jigsaw puzzle to represent the interior of derelict space ships. One player controls the Space Marines, and the other controls the Genestealers.

The game is notable for its hidden play mechanics, from which it derives much of its playability and tension. The actual number of genestealers in play is hidden from the Marines because they came into play as "blips" which can represent creatures or in the Deathwing expansion and second edition. On the other hand, the Marine player has a number of "action points" available each turn which are only revealed to the genestealer player after they are used up.

In the second edition, the extra points are no longer hidden from the genestealer player.

Some of the campaigns were also published in the german edition of the White Dwarf. The missions and cardboard extras are identical. Edition 2. Edition 3. Edition Deathwing Genestealer 1.

Edition: 2 Space Marines with heavy flamer, 8 Space Marines with storm bolter and power glove, 2 of them are meant to be used as Sergeants, 20 Genestealers Deathwing: 4 Space Marines with storm bolter and power glove, 8 Genestealers Genestealer: 5 Space Marine Librarians, 1 0 Genestealer Hybrids with different weapons 2.

Edition: 2 Space Marine Sergeants with storm bolter and power sword, 2 Space Marines with heavy flamer, 6 Space Marines with storm bolter and power glove, 20 Genestealers 3. Edition: 1 Librarian, 1 Space Marine Sergeant with storm bolter and power sword, 1 Space Marine Sergeant with thunder hammer, 1 Space Marine with heavy flamer, 1 Space Marine with assault cannon, 1 Space Marine with lightning claws, 1 Space Marine with storm bolter and chain fist, 5 Space Marines with storm bolter and power glove, 1 Broodlord, 22 Genestealers Blips: 1.

Edition: 9 x 1,4x2,9x3 version 1. If you have just the base set of the 1st edition: The base set includes the campaign Sin of Damnation with 6 mis- sions. The mission Pitfall from WD can be played as well, as the magazine contains the necessary extra items. It would also be possible to play the mission Delaying Action from WD The magazine contains the necessary extra board section and other items.

You may play it with two standard squads instead of the command squad for achieving a balanced game. The mission Denzark's Hammer is also playable.

You should choose the version published in WD , as it contains the neces- sary extra board section and other items. The mission may be bal- anced with 2 standard squads.

The missions may be balanced with 2 standard squads. You could also play the missions 1 and 2 from the campaign Spawn of Execration from the mission book of the 2 nd edition. Mission 5 is playable if you add some counters. So there are not many additional missions that you can play with just the base set of the 1 st edition and the older WD , and are hard to find.

In total only up to 15 missions are playable with the base set of the 1 st edition. If you are really looking for more missions you should consider downloading a copy of Deathwing as this will expand your possibilities very much. There are many missions from Campaigns and the White Dwarf which could be played with the board sections and counters from Deathwing but are meant to be played with Genestealer Hybrids and the psychic combat rules from Genestealer. You would have to significantly change these missions if you want to play them just with Death- wing.

You can play all 18 missions of the 2 nd edition, but the first 6 are already included in the 1 st edition base set. You can also play all 1 2 missions from WD 1 97, 1 99, and The 5 missions from WD are playable if you have a second base set. From the mission book of the 3 rd edition many missions have al- ready been published before, but the missions 6, 7 and 8 are new and playable as well, for two of them you just have to add some items.

This gives you at least 45 missions or even 50, if you have a sec- ond base set. The expansion Campaigns is not really worth downloading, if you don't own or want to use the rules from Genestealer.

You could play 5 more missions from WD , if you have a second base set. If you have just the 2 nd edition: You could play all missions from the mission book of the 1 st edition, but these are included in the mission book of the 2 nd edition any- way.

You could also play mission 1 from Deathwing but would have to adapt the composition of the marine forces. You can play all 18 missions of the 2 nd edition. You can play the 3 missions in WD , the 3 missions in WD and the 3 missions in WD , using the extra items in these magazines.

The mail order stocks sold out three days before release, [6] and most Games Workshop retail outlets were sold out within a week of release. Games Workshop announced no plans to reprint this edition of the game as it was intended to be a limited release. This edition featured new sculpts designed specifically for Space Hulk , instead of being shared with the sets for the tabletop game Warhammer 40, Each of the twelve miniatures representing Terminators has a distinct appearance, such as Brother Omnio being shown consulting a scanner mounted in his Power Fist.

The miniatures representing Genestealers were depicted in various poses, with one bursting up from the floor and another climbing down from the wall. The counters and the board sections of the game were made using new debossing techniques which applied shallow depressions into the cardboard.

The rules were modernised to some extent, but were largely similar to those of the 1st edition. Also, a new rule, allowing a Terminator to go on guard essentially a close combat version of overwatch , was added. Although the Games Workshop website sold out of Space Hulk less than 24 hours after it was available for pre-order, most stores had a number of copies available to download on release day.

The game was largely a re-release of the third edition with a few rules tweaked. It featured additional board sections and missions, plus refreshed graphical presentation of the existing art assets.

Three expansion campaigns were released specifically for iPad. These campaigns chronicle other Space Marine chapters, and they include rules for additional Space Marine Terminator troopers and weapons. Two types of spin-offs of the board game have been released - video game and card game.

Numerous video games based on the Space Hulk board game have been released. Using overhead maps, the player orders the Marine squads, and controls individual Marines via first-person shooter interfaces. The game features a time-limited option to pause the action while enabling the player to continue issuing commands.

Space Hulk: The sequel to the video game, Vengeance of the Blood Angels combines first-person shooter gameplay with real-time tactical elements. In , a mobile phone version called Warhammer: Space Hulk was released. This game replicated the board game's play mechanics and allowed play as either Space Marines or Genestealers.

In , a small group of hobbyists [9] released a PC conversion of the board game, along with assorted scenarios, for free over the Internet.

However, within a month the game was removed from the developers' site. They noted that the web download traffic was creating problems, and that Games Workshop were threatening legal action due to THQ 's current ownership of the Warhammer 40, video game license. According to the development team, their attempts to negotiate for the release of the game with THQ were refused, resulting in the game being rebranded under the name "Alien Assault".

It allows two players to compete head-to-head over an internet or LAN connection, or in a hotseat mode. The game's rules do not strictly adhere to the board game, but are a hybrid of the first and second editions. QSpacehulk is another fan-made freeware available which strictly follows the rules of the second edition.

The game has received mixed reviews, holding a rating of 59 out of , based on 4 reviews on review aggregator Metacritic. It was released in November for PC. It expands the gameplay environment, beyond the narrow maze-like corridors of the original board game and earlier video games, to include massive space ship interiors such as a cathedral. The story is co-written by Gav Thorpe , a longtime Games Workshop author and games designer. Matt Forbeck comments: It's an icon of well-nested mechanics that build a system far greater than its parts. The game pits an investigative force of Space Marines against such a coven.

In total only up to 15 missions are playable with the base set of the 1 st edition. Playing the marines on the other hand is engaging and tactically challenging -- partly because the Space Marines player is constrained by a time limit for his turn. You can play all 18 missions of the 2 nd edition.
