Unlike Thomas' other two novels that I also thoroughly enjoyed His at Night and Private Arrangements , this book does not have secondary characters with an intertwining story line and the book focuses solely on the literal and figurative journey that Leo and Bryony take across India and learn about each other to find what really matters. Again, have to comment on Thomas' unique characters, which does not mold into your typical historical romance novel and her talent for giving them depth.

I was glad I continued reading. Both characters are brilliant Leo is hailed as a mathematical prodigy and she a medical pioneer, especially given the time period. I liked how Thomas made them both flawed despite their brilliance, it made the characters and the story a lot more interesting. Leo's character is more in line with your typical hero, handsome, confident, charming with the world at his feet, but his flaw in the story ended up being the factor that created misery and heartbreak for the both of them.

For Bryony's part, on the outside she is cool and aloof with seemingly more interest in the medical science than the emotional aspect of medicine and caring for patients, but there is so much more to her than that. The catalyst that frees them both is not something superficial but a realistic jarring of their emotional baggage.

I love how the story and the history of these two characters unfolded in the book, going back and forth in present and in time, slowly unravelling the story behind the characters, their motivation, their relationship growing up, their courtship, their marriage and the reason for its dissolution. All the while the author is giving you a history lesson on the political climate of India and creating a beautiful backdrop for the story. I cannot wait for the author's new books! This book is a real keeper.

I will not describe the plot, because several reviewers have already done it, but I would comment that the book is emotionally precious, dreamy, romantic, sensually, delicious and deeply satisfying. So good!

Both protagonists have made mistakes during their past together, none of them is perfect and that's what makes so special this story, because it allows us to follow the discovery journey between these two. Understanding that forgiveness and second chances are not easy given when there is so much pain and mistrust between, but with true love this writer allows us to believe that anything is possible.

And that's what I am looking in a romantic book: Her writing is magnificent and so is the historical research. Kudos to Mrs.

Anne Flosnik did an admirable job with this most wonderful story. I do admit that I had the paper copy of the book with me constantly while I was consuming Not Quite a Husband because I became so completely caught up that I was loathe to let it go for even a second example: I switched to reading while in the dentist's waiting room and because it is wonderful to be able to quickly reread a particularly interesting or complex scene.

Bryony IS a bit hard to like at the outset of the book, but my familiarity with Sherry Thomas' writing assuaged any doubt that I would come to empathize with her quickly.

Thomas' skill that one continues to learn about and understand the main characters right up to the very end. Like reaching the heart of an artichoke, the true beauty of the characters grows as one gets deeper and deeper. The wounds Leo and Bryony inflicted on each other early in their lives were almost lethal, but as they learned more about themselves and each other, they were able to truly overcome their past.

Then of course there were the fascinating descriptions of the events and environs in northern India at the end of the 19th century, all written in Thomas' exquisite lyrical style. I tend to put off reading Sherry Thomas' books as long as possible because once I start one, I cannot put it down and there is, unfortunately, only a limited supply of new material. Not Quite a Husband was worth the wait, and Sherry Thomas is a gift to be treasured.

It's also a darn good read". Flashbacks to Chinese Turkestan add an exotic, mesmerizing touch". Thomas's views on writing[ edit ] "I write complex situations with no pat solutions because they are what interest me as a reader: hard choices and what people do in the face of such hard choices. In the end, the characters themselves must have the strength and maturity to choose the right path.

What kind of terrain are we dealing with? What kind of climate? What kind of people would the [hero and heroine] come across? So yes, more work is necessary to world-build, but only so that my readers would be able to visualize and understand the setting.

For The Hidden Blade she was on a tight deadline and only slept for two hours a day, several days in a row, so afterward in an interview she said, "not writing for at least a week or so seems like heaven! With historical romances particularly, she said, "I will also posit that since marriage was so final and divorce so difficult — and women's lives so much more restricted — the stakes around a romance were higher in Ye Olde Times.

Because learning to love another person is one of the most deep-reaching, surprising, and sublime of human experiences. And because the genre boasts some of the best writers working today. I adore that it was a time of tremendous advances in scientific understanding and technological capability—in Private Arrangements, for example, there is an automobile—and yet people still lived under a formality that is exotic and almost incomprehensible to us here in 21st-century America.

That formality sets off a wonderful tension for a writer to explore the sexual charge in a look, a word, a hand held a fraction too long. But she cautions that above all, the story must work or the reader will not care about the details.

King integrate historical world-building into their narratives. His wife, I suspect, has been in unrequited love with him all along. And my sister, God help us all, loves a married man. Compared to them, my loneliness seems terribly tame, something to be borne cheerfully.

Have you ever been lonely? Or have you been too self-sufficient to notice? Author Kiersten Hallie Krum asserted that Thomas, along with Joanna Bourne and Meredith Duran , make up the forefront of a new wave in historical romance fiction strong in lyrical prose.I wanted to say thank you to Beanbag for urging me to not get distracted from reading 4. There's a scene where Bryony tells Leo why she suddenly changed before they married. And in the end, so catastrophically flawed. How to write a great review. Did women still slap men for such unauthorized incursions?
